how an expansion valve works
The expansion valve relieves pressure on the liquid refrigerant in the evaporator, allowing it to expand or change state from liquid to vapour. The hot liquid refrigerant entering the expansion valve is high-pressure liquid refrigerant. Feel the liquid line at its connection to the expansion valve to confirm this.
